Open Letter

On October 23, 2023, Schumer was one of over 200 celebrities and entertainment professionals who signed an open letter to President Biden organized by the #NoHostageLeftBehind campaign. The letter called for the release of hostages taken by Hamas during the October 7 attack.

The letter stated in part:

"We are heartened by Friday's release of the two American hostages, Judith Ranaan and her daughter Natalie Ranaan and by today's release of two Israelis, Nurit Cooper and Yocheved Lifshitz, whose husbands remain in captivity. But our relief is tempered by our overwhelming concern that 220 innocent people, including 30 children, remain captive by terrorists, threatened with torture and death. They were taken by Hamas in the savage massacre of October 7, where over 1,400 Israelis were slaughtered — women raped, families burned alive, and infants beheaded."

The letter thanked Biden for his "unshakable moral conviction, leadership, and support for the Jewish people" and stated: "We all want the same thing: Freedom for Israelis and Palestinians to live side by side in peace. Freedom from the brutal violence spread by Hamas. And most urgently, in this moment, freedom for the hostages."[1]

Social media statements

On October 7, 2023, Schumer posted on Instagram a graphic reading “I stand with Israel” alongside a video calling the Hamas attack “pure evil.” [2]

On October 15, 2023, she shared images of Israeli hostages, including children, writing: “Bring them home. These are babies. No justification.”

In December 2023, after a video circulated showing her at a pro-Israel rally, she posted: “There is no moral equivalence. Hamas is a terrorist group. Israel is a democracy trying to protect its citizens.”

On January 28, 2024, following the International Court of Justice’s issuance of provisional measures in the genocide case brought by South Africa, Schumer reposted a statement from the Israeli government rejecting the genocide allegation, adding: “Accusing Israel of genocide is a perversion of the word. Hamas’s mission is to wipe out Jews. Israel’s mission is to defend itself.”

In February 2024, she appeared on The Howard Stern Show and said: “I’ve read the ICJ ruling. They didn’t find genocide. They found it was plausible. People are running with a word that hasn’t been proven."

On December 5, 2024, after Amnesty International released a report concluding that Israel had committed genocide, Schumer did not comment directly. She posted a photo of herself at a Hanukkah candle-lighting with the caption “Light always wins.”

As of May 17, 2026, Schumer has not publicly responded to the December 2024 genocide findings from Human Rights Watch or B’Tselem.
